Five Signs That Sedation Dentistry is Right For You

As a provider of sedation dentistry, we know how important it is to receive dental care but how difficult it can be for some people to do so.  Millions of adults suffer from some sort of dental anxiety.  In many cases, this manifests itself as basic discomfort and stress.  However, for some people, it prevents them from visiting the dentist altogether.  Hollywood movies, horror stories of root canals, and bad childhood experiences all contribute to the fear and eventually it can seem much larger than it is.  Our solutions are simple, easy to use, and effective. So if you have anxiety, we encourage you to give us a call.

You might need sedation dentistry if….

1.     You have been avoiding going to the dentist. If it has been a few years since you came in for a teeth cleaning, dental exam, or if you have a toothache that you have been ignoring, sedation can help you to get the care that you need.  Sedation addresses the anxiety that may be preventing you from scheduling a necessary appointment.  By taking a small pill before the visit starts, you can be calm and relaxed.

2.     You had a bad experience in the past. If you do not like receiving dental care because a procedure was uncomfortable before or the office you visited was stressful or chaotic, we encourage you to give it another try.  Our office is relaxing, our staff is calm, and we can help you to feel entirely relaxed when you are here.

3.     You are having significant dental work.  If you are simply having your teeth cleaned, you may not need sedation.  However, if you are having something like a root canal or a cosmetic procedure like veneers, these appointments take slightly longer.  Even patients that are generally comfortable with dental care can become stressed as the appointment goes on. Sedation dentistry is incredibly helpful because it can help you to relax no matter how long your procedure is.

4.     You have general anxiety.  If you tend to be an anxious or worrisome person, sedation dentistry can help by calming your nerves.  Taken before your procedure starts, it can place you into a calm state of mind without altering your ability to move like normal or the ability to respond to questions.  Essentially, you will be aware but calm.

5.     You are worried about pain.  When we give you sedation, it addresses your emotional state.  Very often people feel discomfort not because the procedure actually hurts but because they are tense and working it up in their mind.  In many cases, our patients do not require any pain medication when they are using sedation.  However, if you still want the area to be numbed, we can do that as well.

Our goal is to help you to maintain lifelong oral health and to use the tools necessary to accomplish that goal.  Sedation has been incredibly helpful, allowing us to provide anxious patients with the care that they need.  If any of the above signs sound like you, call and schedule an appointment with our dental office today.
